Fireworks – What to do!!

comfort pet during fireworks

The fireworks season is just around the corner, and many pets get very stressed due the noise of the fireworks

Here are some helpful tips on how to help your pet overcome their firework fears

  1. Walking your pet before the event (before it gets dark for fireworks) will help limit exposure to the noise,
  2. Providing your pet with a safe den (for example, under the kitchen table, beside your feet or under the stair cupboard) can help to alleviate stress.
  3. Closing the curtains and putting on the TV or playing some music can provide a welcome distraction.
  4. Keep your cat inside with the cat flap locked and windows closed to ensure they cant escape outside.
  5. Trying to keep life as normal as possible will help to reduce anxiety.
  6. Keeping pets distracted by playing with a favourite toy and games may help some dogs with a mild phobia.
  7. Do not overly fuss your pets as this makes them even more anxious, although it is very important that some form of comfort is offered as this can be very helpful and, if they seek it from you, do not deny them.
  8. There are a variety of both pharmaceuticals and natural products available to help your pet overcome their fears and phobias. Some of these products are available over-the counter, whilst others will require your pet to be seen by a vet before being prescribed.
